How to use UNetbootin to create a Live Linux USB

If you want to test Ubuntu, but once you’ve decided to use it on a regular basis, Wubi probably might good for you. But if you use Ubuntu or other distributions as your main OS, you will need to use a flash drive free utility called UNetbootin. It is a Live USB creation tool that can be used to create a Live Linux USB flash drive from an ISO and contents of the linux CDs through internet. So, you not need to burn CD or DVD, just download UNetbootin and run.

UNetbootin allows you to create bootable Live USB drives for Ubuntu, Fedora, and other Linux distributions without burning a CD. It runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. You can either let UNetbootin download one of the many distributions supported out-of-the-box for you, or supply your own Linux .iso file if you’ve already downloaded one or your preferred distribution isn’t on the list.

For the purposes of this tutorial, I’ll show you “how to use UNetbootin to create a Live Linux USB”. The following assumes your working from within Windows and have 1GB or large of flash drive.

  1. Download UNetBootin for Windows.
  2. Download your favorite Linux ISO (not require).
  3. Run the application, just double click the Unetbootin Executable file.

  4. If you plan to use UNetbootin to download the disc image, make sure the “Distribution” box is checked, and then choose the operating system and version from the drop-down boxes. If you already have a ISO image, Diskimage will be checked and click “…” button to find the ISO file you’ve already downloaded to your hard drive.
  5. Select drive letter that matches your USB flash drive.
  6. Click OK and UNetbootin will prepare your disk.
  7. At the end you’ll see a message asking if you want to reboot, click Reboot Now

  8. Set your system BIOS or boot menu to boot from the USB device and enjoy your favorite Live Linux on USB
